Sophomore Day!
Bergen Athletics Department celebrates Sophomore Day at half-time. Congrats to sophomores, Allison Bryan, Anira Calamia, Amy Culhane, and Elizabeth Vargas.
PARAMUS, NJ -- Bergen Bulldogs Women's basketball defeated Camden County College 59-44 Saturday afternoon for their third straight win. The game was close early but the Bulldogs pulled away late to improve to 14-6 on the season.
Bergen played from behind for most of the first quarter, but Liz Vargas hit a 3-point buzzer beater with 4 seconds remaining to take a 15-14 lead at first break. The bulldogs lost the lead early in the second quarter and once again spent most of the quarter trying to catch up. A hot streak at the end of the half took Bergen to a 32-26 lead at halftime - their largest lead of the game at that point. At half time Bergen held their annual Sophomore Day ceremony honoring each of the teams sophomores. It was a nice presentation as each sophomore was presented a few small gifts. Each of their families was then invited on to the court for a picture.
The Bulldogs started off the second half with their strongest quarter of the game. They outscored Camden 16-8 in the third quarter to extend their lead to 48-34 after three quarters. Bergen never looked back and was able to hold off Camden for a 59-44 victory.
"A win is a win even though it wasn't our best game," said head coach Tracy Green, "it was a great day to have our sophomore day today, coming out with a win at home."
Allison Bryan and Liana Martinez led the way for the Bulldogs as each recorded a double-double. Bryan finished with 15 points and 15 rebounds while Martinez finished with 19 points and 10 rebounds.
Bergen returns to action this Tuesday night with a home game against Raritan Valley Community College at 5:00pm. The Lions are a tough team as they are 17-6 overall and have won 5 of their last 6 games.
