Softball Sweeps Ocean County for First Road Wins of 2024

PARAMUS, NJ- The Bulldog softball team swept Ocean County College in a Garden State Athletic Conference and Region 19 doubleheader this afternoon, with a 20-10 win in five innings in game one before sealing the day with a 14-11 decision in game two. The wins are the first for Bergen Softball since 2020.
Game One: Bergen 20, Ocean 10
How it Happened
- The Bulldogs started the first inning giving up 2 early runs to the Vikings.
- Bergen would respond in the bottom of the 1st scoring 6 runs on 4 hits.
- Brandi Shortway homered driving in 3 scoring Kylah Kosko and Wiktoria Brauntsch walked to lead off the inning.
- Ocean would respond with a run in the top of the second before Bergen erupted for 10 runs in the second.
- In the top of the second inning, Mary Palazzo would single and advance and eventually score on wild pitches.
- Later in the second Melody Peralta would hit a grand slam driving in Mallory Mummert, Shortway and Brauntsch.
- Jadyn Isikliyol would collect the win going 5 innings and striking out 6
Top Performances
- Peralta led the team going 2-for-4 with 4 RBIs
- Shortway, Peralta and Elena Kerr would each score 3 runs in the game.
Game Two: Bergen 14, Ocean 11
How it Happened
- After two scoreless innings of play, Ocean would open the scoring by plating 2 runs
- Bergen responded with 5 runs in their half of the inning to take a 5-2 lead.
- The Vikings would once again take the lead scoring 4 runs in the top half of the fourth
- The Bulldogs would respond with 3 runs of their own in the bottom of the fourth. And never surrender the lead again. Scoring 3 runs in the bottom of the 5th and 6th respectively.
Top Performances
- Brandi Shortway led the Bulldogs going 4-for-5, with 2 runs scored, 5 RBIs, including a double and a triple
- Kylah Kosko drove in 3 runs for Bergen
- Mary Palazzo fanned four batters in 4 innings, allowing three runs
