Paramus, NJ –The Bergen Community College men's soccer team secured an exhilarating come-from-behind victory over Middlesex College on Tuesday afternoon, overcoming a late deficit and playing down a man to win 4-3. This dramatic victory improves the Bulldogs' record to 5-1-2 overall, showcasing their resilience and fighting spirit.
Bergen took an early lead with two goals in the first 12 minutes, courtesy of Oscar Gomez and Davi Martins Dos Santos. Gomez scored in the 5th minute with a well-placed penalty kick, followed by Dos Santos's goal just six minutes later to put Bergen ahead 2-0. However, Middlesex responded with two goals of their own, one from David Pereira and another from Kenneth Garcia, leveling the match at 2-2 by halftime.
The second half brought intense drama, with Middlesex's Pereira finding the net again in the 78th minute to put the visitors ahead 3-2. Bergen's situation worsened after a red card left them down a man. Despite the setback, the Bulldogs refused to back down.
Just two minutes after Middlesex's go-ahead goal, Bergen's Tugay Boogluer stepped up, netting an unassisted goal in the 79th minute to equalize the match. Then, in the 81st minute, Boogluer struck again, scoring the winning goal and capping a remarkable comeback for Bergen.
Boogluer's heroics, coupled with strong performances from goalkeeper Batu Erer, who recorded 3 saves, and forward Oscar Gomez, who added 4 shots on goal, ensured that Bergen finished on top despite the odds.
Head Coach Jonathan Sanchez expressed immense pride in his team's resilience, stating, "To come back after going down a man and finding a way to win speaks volumes about the character of this group. The players showed incredible fight, and we'll build on this moving forward."
Bergen will next take on RCSJ-Cumberland on Saturday, September 28th, looking to continue their momentum in the conference.
