Cherie Smedile 1,000 Point Milestone
Bergen's Sophomore Shooting Guard, Cherie Smedile, scores her 1,000 career point last night vs. CC Philadelphia.
Paramus, NJ – Bergen CC's Cherie Smedile, sophomore shooting guard from Saddle Brook, NJ, needed 27 points to hit the 1,000 point milestone prior to the women's basketball game vs. CC of Philadelphia on January 25th. Cherie didn't show any signs of being nervous and was able to achieve that special milestone in the second quarter of the game. After being taken out of the game in the second half once the score was out of reach for CC of Philadelphia Cherie finished with 37 points on the night and Bergen won by the score of 74-31.
Cherie Smedile is now the fourth women's basketball player in Bergen's history to reach the 1,000 point milestone. The last BCC player to achieve that point total was Camille Barone during the 1980-81 season. The top two scorers in Bergen's history are Karen Smith (1,179 points; 1975-77) and Chris Kowalski (1,163 points; 1977-79). Camille Barone is third on that list with 1,092 points. Cherie has a good chance of passing Barone with nine regular season games to go for the Lady Bulldogs.
According to the most recent NJCAA Div. III poll Cherie is currently eighth in the nation in points scored with 429, fifth in the nation in field goals with 162, 11th in the nation in steals with 74 and 18th in the nation for points per game (20.6).
